Recently the New York Jets second year coach Rex Ryan made some news headlines.  Unfortunately the headlines were not for winning games but for his use of profanity on an HBO special in which they put a microphone on the coach during training camp.  Apparently his language was excessive, even for an NFL coach.  Ex-NFL Super Bowl winning coach Tony Dungy was asked his opinion on using profanity.  He said that he didn’t think it was necessary for any leader to use profanity and that he would not have tolerated it on his staff.  Rex Ryan’s response was that he was a good person and he will stand on his own merits and that Tony Dungy should not judge him.

What really caught my attention was his comment that he was a good person.  I guess a good person who uses such bad language that they bleeped him over a dozen times.  I was thinking about the countless times I have watched the news and after someone has done something unspeakable and horrendous, someone always says, something like; “he was a good guy, or he/she was not a bad person but just made a bad decision”, something to that effect .  The problem lies with our definition of good.

In Mark 10:17, 18, the rich young man fell at Jesus feet and said “Good Teacher what must I do to inherit eternal life?” NIV.  Jesus answer was “Why do you call me good?”’  “No one is good-except God alone.”  Jesus is doing two things here.  One, if the rich young man is calling Jesus good and only God alone is good then Jesus must be God.  The second thing is that he is reminding the rich young man that no human being is good, only God is good.

Contrary to what Rex Ryan thinks, he is not a good person.  Neither is Tony Dungy, neither am I nor neither is anyone else.  When we compare ourselves with the only one who is good, God, we are in desperate trouble. Thanks be to God that the one who is good, God alone, showed us mercy and grace by sending Christ to die on the cross so that we can be better than good.  We can be filled with the righteousness of Christ.    This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe.  There is no difference.  Romans 3:22.  Praise be to God!
